Bus Rules and Regulations

Students living one mile or more from the school are eligible for bus transportation.  Route information will be available from the Main Office in early August.  Children will not be allowed to ride a bus other than their own without permission from the bus company.  Students must not interfere with drivers doing their jobs.  Should this become a problem, the principal will take disciplinary action as follows.

  • First Offense:  A warning will be issued to the student with a report to the parent or guardian.  The parent or guardian’s notification should prevent a recurrence of the problem.
  • Second Offense:  Disciplinary action will be taken, or a second warning will be issued at the discretion of the principal and depending upon the seriousness of the offense.

  • Third Offense:  Riding privileges will be taken away.  The length of the suspension shall depend upon the seriousness of the offense.  A report will be made to the parent or guardian.

Cooperating with your driver is essential for the safety of all students who ride the school bus.  The Durham Bus Company can be reached at 298-6831.

The regulation is taken from the State of New Mexico School Bus Driver Handbook (regulation #77-2-1997 revised edition), and apply at all times to behavior on the bus:

  1. The driver is in full charge of students when they are riding the bus.  The students must obey the driver promptly.

  2. Students should never stand in the traveled portion of the roadway while waiting for the bus.

  3. Student shall not get on off the bus or move about within the bus while it is in motion.

  4. Students will not be permitted to leave the bus on the way to or from school except at their regular assigned stop without the advanced permission from a school official.    Once students are loaded they must remain on the bus until dropped off at their bus stop.

  5. Students who must cross the road after leaving the bus will cross only when the driver signals all is clear.

  6. Students must be on time at their assigned bus stop.  The bus driver will not wait for students who are not in the loading area.

  7. Animals and breakable glass are not allowed on the bus.
